(2)The second technology innovation: Bypassing the facsimile newspaper transmission and adopting the remote page decription language transmission(start from early 1991) During the 1980s, paper moulds of newspaper plates are transported by airplane, only few of cities were using newspaper facsimlie machines to transmit newspaper pages. Because there is a lot of information during the facsimile transmission, the quality of the newspaper reprint can not be asured. The newspaper offices in China use the same pagination system, and so the same page description language(PDL) is used. This makes it easy to use the unified page description language in the transmission of newspaper pages. The PDL-based newspaper page transmission is adopted in 1990. When the recipient receives the page transmission, newspaper pages are described in PDL, when the recipient receives the page description in this form, they can render the page image without any lost of details. By using page description language in the transmission, the amount of the information transmitted is reduced trmendously, being about 1/50 of the facsimile transmission. This makes the transmission speed very high. In 1992, People”s Daily started to transmit their newspaper pages to 22 cities around China in this way via satellite, and it takes only two minutes to transmit a single page. This technology was soon polularized among the domestic and overseas Chinese newspaper industries. After 1992, most of the “central level” Chinese newspaper were using the method to transmit their newspaper pages, and the “proincial newspaper’ and “city newspapers” were also using this method to transmit the pages, and their circulation amount was increased by this way.
(3) The third technology innovation: Farewell the traditional electronic color separation scanner(starting from early 1992) Before 19992, electronic color separation scanners were used for the composition of almost all the color publications in China. It took 2 to 3 hours t ocomplete the separation and composition for a color plate. In 1987, we brought forward a plan to develop an opened color phototypesetter system in order to replace the electronic color separation scanner. In 1992, Macao Daily adopted our color newspaper publishing system, which marked the beginning of the technology innovation of abandoning the electronic color separation scanner. By using this system, text and color images were processed together, and it took only 20 minutes to output a color plate(now the time has been decreased to 2 minutes.) Currently there are hundreds of newspapers publishing color pages, and tens of nespapers are publishing color everyday, China-made system now takes 90% market share in the color newspaper market. In 1994, we also successfully developed high-end desktop color-publishing system, the output quality of which is comparable with the electronic color separation system, and thus entered domain of the color pictorial and magazine.
(4) The fourth technology innovation: throwing away the paper and pen by implementing the full control of the workflow of news processing(starting from early 1994) In 1994, Shenzhen Evening news adopted the Founder Editional Workflow Management System. This enabled their editors being able to edit their newspaper pages themsevles and thus marks the beginning of the abandoning of paper and pen. Until now there are more than 200 newspaper offices working in this way. Except the editorial workflow management systems, advertisement producing and management systems, distribution systems and electronic newspaper systems were also developed. These systems were closely connected with the newspaper pagination systems, and thus constituted an integrated information management solution for newspaper offices, The development of the internet has offered a superior condition for the highly integrated newspaper turnkey solution. Now, the page information is not only used in the printing, but can also be sent to the Web server to form a trendy electronic newspaper. The manuscript is stored in standard XML format. Users can access the workflow through the internet at any place. When the general editor of Guangzhou Daily were once in the United State, he used internet to access the workflow of his newspaper office, which surprised his foreign colleagues.
