Many great leap forwards have been experienced by China printing and publishing industry fro the past 20 years. During these years, the lead type composition was abandoned by directly adopting the laser typesetting system, the airlifting of paper molds of newspaper pages was replaced directly with the satellite transmission of newspaper page information, the color page plate can be output directly without galley proofing and the internet technology was introduced to digitalize the printing house and newspaper offices. Among all these achievements, four technology innovations can be assumed.
(1) The first technology innovation: leaving lead and fire and leaping directly from lead type composition towards laser phototype composition(1987-1993). 20 years ago, almost all the printing factories in China were using lead types to composite pages. Based on an investigation of the technical features of the second generation optical mechanical phototypeseter and the third generation CRT phototypestters, considering the huge size of the Chinese character set and the technological status at that time in China, we decided to bypass the second and third generation phototypesetters which were most polular at that time, and develop directly the non-commercialized forth generation laser phototypesetting system.
As a result of this, the China printing industry did not experience the polupar using of the second generation opical mechanical phototypesetter and third generation CRT phototypesetter. The industry leaped directly toward the most advanced forth gerneration laser photo-type composition.
When the project of laser phototype composition system was initiated, we found that the huge size of the Chinese character set is a big problem. The huge size of the character set made the storage amount of the font information very large, so we are forced earlier than our western colleagues to adopt the outline description of fonts to reduce the amount of information. There is another big obstacle when processding the project, that is the description of font shapes. There are more strokes contained in a single Chinese character. The size of those vertical and horizontal strokes must keep steady when the font is resized. This forces us to be the first one who adopted the HINT technology to describe the key features of the vertical strokes in a character.
Besides, we adopted the full-page output strategy from the beginning, that is, the page of both newspapers and books is output ready to be used in plate making. There is no need for stripping and galley proof after the output. The pages are composed on the computer screen and are output as a whole.
